What Is Sedation Dentistry & How Does It Work?

Team Sedation Dentistry

If you’re one of the millions of people suffering from dental phobia, sedation dentistry may be a good option for you. Sedation dentistry is a type of dental care that uses medication to help patients relax and feel comfortable during their appointment. In this article, we will discuss what sedation dentistry is and how it works.

What are the main types of sedation available?

Different types of sedation can be used during dental procedures. The type of sedation that is right for you will depend on your level of anxiety and the type of procedure you have done. The most common types of sedation used in dentistry are nitrous oxide, oral sedatives, and IV sedation.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a gentle form of sedation inhaled through a mask during your appointment. You will remain awake and able to communicate with your dentist throughout the procedure. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly, so you’ll be able to drive yourself home after your appointment.

Oral Sedatives

Oral sedatives are pills provided at your appointment to help you relax. The most common oral sedative used in dentistry is diazepam (Valium). Another sedative agent is Halcion which is typically in powder form and place under your tongue. With Halcion, you will also not remember much of the procedure. Oral sedatives will make you drowsy, but you will still be awake during your procedure. You will need someone to drive you home after your appointment because the effects of the medication can last for several hours.

IV Sedation (General Anesthesia)

IV sedation is a type of moderate sedation that is administered through an IV in your arm. You will remain conscious during the procedure but may not remember much about it afterward.

IV sedation is often used for more complex procedures. You will need someone to drive you home after your appointment because the effects of the medication can last for several hours.
